Institute of Science Tokyo

Advancing science and human wellbeing

Institute of Science Tokyo will be established on October 1, 2024, following the merger between Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tokyo Institute of Technology.

The name of the new university, Institute of Science Tokyo, was chosen from among more than 6,000 proposals submitted by the public.

This name encompasses the new university's strong desire to spearhead the advancement of science from the international hub of Tokyo. With our integrated approach, we will unite the traditional strengths of Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tokyo Institute of Technology with the humanities, social sciences, and other fields, and work together with society to create a bright, vibrant future.

The abbreviated name of the university, Science Tokyo, reflects a cordial community that welcomes new ideas and people. It immediately identifies our commitment to science and indicates the university's geographical location, a hub where new science is pioneered and shared with the world.

Science Tokyo’s mission

Advancing science and human wellbeing to create value for and with society.

Institute of Science Tokyo

The “Science S” is the seal of Institute of Science Tokyo. The two arches at the top and bottom represent our philosophy of scientific advancement and human wellbeing, as well as the heritage of the two historic universities joining forces. The arch in the center firmly connects the two. Together, these components form a single fluid stroke flowing dynamically from bottom left to top right. This continuous flux expresses the spirit of inquiry that allows us to integrate knowledge and technology, and our desire to co-create together with society.
The logotype “Institute of SCIENCE TOKYO” uses a clear, legible font to ensure a polished, professional design. It emphasizes our geographical location and desire to spearhead the advancement of science. The same English logotype will be used at home and abroad to enhance and accelerate recognition globally.

Research and study

Research and study
When 1+1>2

Institute of Science Tokyo seeks to create new science through the convergence of science and engineering, medicine, dentistry, nursing — its collective strengths — and philosophy, psychology, social sciences, and other liberal arts. This approach will allow us to discover yet unknown issues and solve societal problems not merely through addition (1+1=2), but rather through the creation of new academic fields kindled by convergence (1+1>2).
Institute of Science Tokyo's core values guide us toward the discovery and creation of new science.

Core values

  • Explore and freely integrate knowledge and technology, without constraint of preconceptions.
  • Celebrate individuality to foster a rich culture of creation.
  • Continuously challenge existing assumptions and approaches to enable bold reinvention.

Spearheading future research

Throughout their histories, Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tokyo Institute of Technology have delivered outstanding research findings with global impact. Today, the institutions’ research strengths include:

  • Generative medicine
  • Rare disease
  • Oral science
  • Next-generation element strategy
  • Integrated energy science
  • Digital society devices and systems

As the two communities merge, Institute of Science Tokyo is expected to further develop these priority fields, and to create new research fields and value.

Integrated study of medicine, dentistry, science and engineering

The birth of Science Tokyo will provide increased academic and extracurricular opportunities for students of the merging universities. It will also unite students specializing in science and engineering with medicine, dentistry, and health care science students on the same campuses.

Learning through specialized programs
Integrated education program in medicine/dentistry and science/engineering

Science Tokyo will establish new educational programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in April 2025 to enable science and engineering students to systematically study the medical and dental fields, and vice versa. This will facilitate deeper interdisciplinary interaction and collaboration among students. Science Tokyo will apply this new generation of learning to combat intractable diseases and pandemics, share innovations with the world, and pioneer a future society free of disease.
