Peer Life Coaches connect cultures at The World in Songs event
Science Tokyo’s Peer Life Coaches International Exchange Team organized an intercultural exchange event, The World in Songs - with Liberal Arts Faculty, on December 5. The event, held at Hisao & Hiroko Taki Plaza on Ookayama Campus, aimed to explore diverse cultures and deepen intercultural understanding through music introduced by two faculty members from Science Tokyo’s Institute for Liberal Arts (ILA).
Following the success of a workshop on effective study methods in July, the Peer Life Coaches International Exchange Team hosted its second event in the series, this time exploring intercultural connections through music.
Associate Professor Mariko Anno, a leading expert in musicology, and Professor Taro Yamazaki, a specialist in German opera and literature, moved beyond the traditional lecture format to include live performances with their talks. They bridged the gap between centuries-old traditions — specifically Noh and German Lied — and the modern classroom, with participants joining in as a chorus. This collective experience set the stage for the lively discussions that followed.
The energy carried into the breakout sessions. Driven by the performances, participants engaged in debates that spanned diverse cultures and perspectives. Conversations continued until the final moment, reflecting the high level of engagement throughout the day.
Feedback from the session was highly positive, reflecting a high degree of enthusiasm from the participants. Many highlighted the detailed planning and support provided by the staff, which contributed to the smooth flow of the event.
"The interactive components, such as the singing and group discussions, provided a unique learning experience," one participant noted. With requests for future sessions, Science Tokyo’s Peer Life Coaches are already beginning to plan the next chapter of this series.
Science Tokyo’s Student Support Center continues to plan and support activities that enhance the academic pursuits of the Institute’s students.
