On October 2-3, 2025, a joint workshop with RWTH Aachen University (RWTH) was held under the theme “Assistive Technologies and Robots in Healthcare, Nursing, Rehabilitation, and Assistance at Work.” This was the first event since the two universities established a strategic partnership in June. Thirteen researchers from RWTH visited Institute of Science Tokyo and actively exchanged ideas with its researchers and students.

Scenes from the workshop

On the morning of the first day, at the Ishikawadai area of Ookayama Campus, following opening remarks by Prof. Hirotsugu Inoue, Dean of the School of Engineering, presentations on research in robotics for rehabilitation, nursing, and work assistance, along with laboratory tours of the School of Engineering, were conducted to facilitate interaction among researchers. The afternoon featured a hybrid session connecting the RWTH venue and an online audience, offering study abroad information for students and opportunities to network with researchers. Prof. Nobuhiro Hayashi, Vice President for International Strategy and Engagement at Science Tokyo, and Prof. Sven Ingebrandt, Rector's Delegate for Collaboration with Japan at RWTH, introduced their respective universities. Guests from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) also presented study abroad scholarship programs.

On the second day, at Yushima Campus, researchers from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, led by Prof. Tetsuo Sasano, presented research in robotics and medicine, as well as other interdisciplinary fields, followed by a lab tour and a lively exchange of diverse ideas. In the evening, a reception was held in the Faculty Lounge, beginning with a toast by President and CAO Yujiro Tanaka, who expressed his hope for “further deepening the partnership between RWTH and Science Tokyo.”

Science Tokyo ANNEX Aachen, which supported the event, has continuously promoted research and educational exchange between the two universities since its establishment in 2019. The workshop was organized by Prof. Yukio Takeda of the School of Engineering and Prof. Burkhard Corves of RWTH, who have strengthened their collaboration since the joint workshop held at RWTH in 2022 and have advanced joint research projects. The workshop is expected to further deepen researcher exchanges between the two institutions, potentially leading to future collaborative research and more active student exchanges.
