President and CAO Tanaka spoke in Japanese and English to the recipients of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in science and engineering.
Speech to recipients of bachelor's degrees
卒業生の皆さん、本日は誠におめでとうございます。皆さんの努力と成果を心から称え、またご家族や関係者の皆様にも深く感謝申し上げます。
English-speaking graduates, my heartfelt congratulations to all of you today. I sincerely commend your efforts and achievements, and I am deeply grateful to your families and all those who have supported you.
I will now deliver the President's address first in Japanese, and then in English.
今日の卒業式は、東京工業大学と東京医科歯科大学が統合し、新たに誕生した「東京科学大学」の最初の卒業式であるということです。
卒業式、学士という学位を授与するという意味で学位授与式ともいいます。皆さんは英語では何というか知っていますか？
Commencement Ceremony（コメンスメント セレモニー）といいます。Commencement、即ち始める、次の人生を始めるという意味です。全く観点が違いますね。
日本語のように過去を振り返り区切りをつけることも、私は、勿論重要なことだと思います。まず、過去を振り返ってみましょう。
といっても、私は、皆さんとその時間のほとんどを共有していません。しかしながら、確実なことは皆さんの多くが、入学前からパンデミックの影響を受け、入試や学業に多くの苦労を重ねてきたことです。オンライン講義のメリット・デメリットも経験しました。しかし、このパンデミックも、現在では治療法やワクチンの進歩により、コロナウイルス感染症はインフルエンザと大差ないものになりつつあります。この経験を通じて、皆さんは人類が変化に適応する力を持つことを実感したのではないでしょうか。
今度は未来に目を向けてみましょう。
学士課程で皆さんは、科学の進歩を探求する基盤を創られたと思います。
卒業し社会でそれを活かしていく皆さんはいよいよ「人々の幸せ」を探求する場に出たと言えます。企業は基本的には利益を求める集合体ですが、社会への貢献も重要な使命です。
修士課程に進む皆さんは、さらに「科学の進歩」を探求する訳ですが、ここで考えて頂きたいことがあります。それは「科学の進歩」を探求することはひとつのテーマだけに固執することではないということです。「人々の幸せ」を探求することとは決して相反することではなく、両立し得るということです。
私のウェットラボでの研究生活は20年少しの短いものでしたが、アルコール性肝障害の基礎的な研究から当時クローニングされたＣ型肝炎ウイルスの研究から多分化能を有する肝再生へとテーマを変えていきました。 一面からいえば掘り下げが足りなかったとも言えますが、他方、より多くの「人々の幸せ」のための解決策を模索した変遷だったと振り返っています。結果、新たな挑戦が新たな喜びをもたらしてくれました。皆様も、折角医学歯学の仲間たちが出来たのですから、観点を変えることも考えてみてください。
スティーブ・ジョブズは21世紀最大のイノベーションはバイオロジーとテクノロジーの交わるところに産まれると言っています。
そこには、未開の分野が持つ自由度がある筈です。そして、結果が得られた時には、達成したという喜びに加えて、他の人も喜んでくれるという新しい経験が、素晴らしい経験が待っていると思います。
皆さんがこれから歩む人生100年時代には、スキルアップの機会がいくらでもあります。母校である「Science Tokyo」は、皆さんにとって母なる港、母港でもあります。船が母港で整備を終え、長い航海に出ていき、そして次の航海に備えるために戻ってくるように、皆さんもこの母港から新たな挑戦に旅立ち、必要な時には再び戻ってきてください
名前が変わっても、この地に母校があることに変わりはありません。母校はより大きくなり、多様な見識を持つ仲間が増えました。これにより、新たな価値を創出し、これまで以上に社会に貢献するチャンスが広がっています。学び直しが必要となった時には、ぜひ母校に戻り、さらなる挑戦を続けてください。
最後に、教職員一同、皆さんの幸せな未来を心より祈念し、改めてお祝いの言葉といたします。本日は誠におめでとうございます。

Today marks a historic milestone as we celebrate the first graduation ceremony of Institute of Science Tokyo, born from the integration of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
Many of you faced unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic during your academic journey. At the same time, you witnessed firsthand humanity’s remarkable ability to adapt and overcome challenges.
For those of you continuing to graduate studies, as you further pursue the advancement of science, I want you to consider something important. Advancing science doesn’t mean focusing on just one theme. It can—and should—coexist with the quest to advance human wellbeing.
During my twenty-plus years in wet lab research, my focus evolved from basic research on alcoholic liver disease to studying the newly cloned hepatitis C virus, and then to liver regeneration using pluripotent cells. Steve Jobs once said, “the biggest innovations of the twenty-first century will be the intersection of biology and technology.” This intersection represents unknown territory with unlimited possibilities.
In this era of 100-year lifespans, there will be many opportunities for you to improve your skills. Science Tokyo will always be your alma mater—your home port—a place to prepare for new challenges. We now have an even more diverse community, creating greater opportunities to contribute to society through new innovations.
On behalf of all the faculty and staff, I wish you happiness and success in your future endeavors. Once again, congratulations to you all.

本日、東京科学大学大学院修士課程、博士課程の学位を取得された皆さん、誠におめでとうございます。この成果は皆さんの努力と、指導教員、ご家族、友人その他の方々のお力添えによって達成されました。入学以来、変わらぬご支援をいただきました関係者の皆様に、心よりお礼申し上げます。
To all those who have earned their master’s and doctoral degrees from Institute of Science Tokyo today, my heartfelt congratulations on your graduation. I sincerely commend your efforts and achievements, and I am deeply grateful to your families and all those who have supported you.

大学院課程の最終目標は、優れた研究成果を上げ、それを社会に還元することにあります。産官学連携による人材開発や研究の社会実装は、より大きな社会貢献をもたらすものと考えています。
修士課程修了の皆さんは、これから社会で活躍する人、博士課程に進む人、アカデミアで研究を続ける人など、それぞれの道に進まれることでしょう。どの道に進まれても、東京科学大学での研究経験を活かし、リサーチマインドを磨き続けていただきたいと思います。
博士課程修了の皆さん、博士という学位は、自ら課題を発見し、それを科学的に解決する能力を備えた独立した研究者であることを証明するものです。コロナ禍の影響で十分な研究生活を送れなかった方もいるかもしれませんが、過去を悔やむのではなく、そこから教訓を見出し、未来を切り拓いていただきたいと思います。
全ての修了生の皆さん、人生100年時代において、新たな機会の創出こそが重要です。日進月歩の科学の世界では、質の保証された形での学び直しがますます重要となっています。
東京科学大学は、理工学系に加えて医歯系学部を有する総合大学として、多彩な見識を持つ仲間とともに新たな価値を創出する場となりました。私たちは、さらに大きな飛躍を期して全学の改革に皆で力を合わせて取り組んでいます。
スティーブ・ジョブズは“the biggest innovations of the twenty-first century will be the intersection of biology and technology.” つまり、21世紀最大のイノベーションはバイオロジーとテクノロジーの交わるところに産まれると言っているのです。
この意味でも、本学が皆さんの学びなおしの場あるいは研究の継続の場としての価値がますます増大すると確信しています。
皆さんにとって、当大学は生涯にわたる学びの母校であり続けます。名前や組織が変わっても、この地に皆さんの母校があることに変わりはありません。

Graduates, once again, my heartfelt congratulations to you all.
The ultimate goal of graduate education is to produce excellent research results and then give back those achievements to society. There are many ways to do this, but I believe that human resource development and implementation of research through industry-government-academia collaboration can bring about great societal contributions.
To our master’s graduates, whether you pursue careers in industry, continue your doctoral studies, or remain in academia, I hope you will continue to refine the research mindset you cultivated here.
To our doctoral graduates, your degree certifies you as an independent researcher capable of identifying and solving problems scientifically. While some of you may have faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, I encourage you to learn from those experiences and look to the future.
In this era of 100-year lifespans, creating new opportunities and pursuing quality continuing education are increasingly important. As a comprehensive university now with both medical and engineering faculties, we offer opportunities to create new value through interdisciplinary collaboration. As Steve Jobs once said, "the biggest innovations of the twenty-first century will be the intersection of biology and technology." There are so many other possible sources of innovation as well. We are confident that our university will be a valuable place for your lifelong learning and research.
