Science Tokyo's Spring Graduation Ceremonies for science and engineering students graduating in academic year 2024 were held on March 26, 2025, at Ookayama Campus. Bachelor's degree recipients were acknowledged in the morning, while master's and doctoral graduates were honored in the afternoon.

This spring, Science Tokyo conferred 236 doctoral degrees, 1,593 master's degrees, 35 professional master's degrees, and 1,009 bachelor's degrees in the science and engineering fields. Joining the graduates and their loved ones at the celebration were President and CEO Naoto Ohtake, President and CAO Yujiro Tanaka, the Institute’s executive vice presidents, deans and directors, and auditors, as well as special guests.

Tanaka kicked things off with a congratulatory speech to the inaugural spring cohort of graduates. He highlighted that a reborn Science Tokyo meant that the graduates’ alma mater was now larger and more diverse, providing more opportunities to create new value and impact in society. He encouraged the graduates to return to Science Tokyo to reskill and take on new challenges in the future.

Next, Ohtake offered his warm words of encouragement. He said he looked forward to seeing everyone succeed in their research, careers, and lives, and presented the graduates with a question. “Will you take the paved, well-trodden path to a known destination, or will you blaze your trail to new landscapes and discoveries? From today, the choice is yours,” Ohtake said.

Guest speakers were also present at both ceremonies. In the morning ceremony, Tokyo Tech* Alumni Association President Kiyoto Ido (Class of 1972, Mathematics, School of Science) shares his thoughts with the bachelor's degree recipients. In the afternoon, Tokyo Tech Alumni Association Executive Director Koshi Maemura (Class of 1983, Chemical Engineering, Graduate School of Science and Engineering) spoke to the master’s and doctoral graduates.

After the guest speeches, degrees were presented to representatives of each cohort of graduating students. At the ceremony for bachelor's degree recipients, students with outstanding academic achievements received the 2024 Institute of Science Tokyo Academic Excellence Award from Tanaka.

The valedictorians for each cohort also offered messages of gratitude and hope to the Science Tokyo community. Kazuki Yamanaka, a Chemical Science and Engineering graduate, spoke in the morning. He noted that, despite the difficulties posed by Covid-19, the efforts of faculty and staff members helped students move forward in a new environment, and this ability would serve as a great source of motivation in the future.

Satomi Ono, a doctoral program graduate from the Department of Life Science and Technology, spoke in the afternoon. She reminded her fellow graduates that the value of their degrees lies in the development and actions of each individual, and acknowledged the significant responsibility that comes with being a Science Tokyo graduate.

To wrap up the morning event, Ryota Takizawa, a bachelor’s program student in Civil and Environmental Engineering, gave a short farewell speech on behalf of the current students. He thanked the graduating students for being reliable mentors who helped their juniors move forward in a new environment during the pandemic, and for reviving nearly lost traditions after Covid-19-related restrictions were eased.

Shengjia Wu, a doctoral program student in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, offered words of encouragement and admiration to the graduates in the afternoon ceremony. “You are the very first April graduates since the two universities merged into the current Institute of Science Tokyo. Your graduations mark not only your personal milestones but also a memorable chapter in our university’s history,” Wu concluded.
