June 3, 2025

Komeito Chief Representative Tetsuo Saito, accompanied by fellow Komeito representatives Nobuhiro Miura, from the House of Councillors, Akira Hirabayashi, from the House of Representatives, and Yudai Kawamura, deputy chair of the Komeito Youth Committee, visited Science Tokyo on May 19. President and CEO Naoto Ohtake and President and CAO Yujiro Tanaka welcomed the group and gave them a tour of Ookayama Campus.

The first stop on the tour took the delegation to the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI), where the director, Professor Yasuhito Sekine, introduced ELSI’s research into the origins of life and the Earth and showed them around the institute’s spacious facilities and various laboratories.

The delegation next visited Taki Plaza, where they met with members of the Minna-no-smile Project, made up of students from both of Science Tokyo’s predecessors: former Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

Saito remarked, “I was impressed by the students’ approach to thinking about how they make the most of the university integration by combining their knowledge of medicine and engineering to the benefit of children with disabilities.”

The visit rounded off with a meeting with the Institute’s executive leadership. Ohtake and Tanaka described the direction Science Tokyo plans to take, and discussed its Visionary Initiative (VI), and how it promotes collaborative co-creation between the medical & dental sciences and the science and engineering fields with Saito and the delegation.

After exchanging views on the development of the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, expansion of the VI program, and strengthening Science Tokyo’s research capabilities, Saito expressed his desire to “extend vigorous support efforts within the political arena to nurture and produce more world-class researchers from Japan.”
