Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) held its annual Homecoming Day event on Ookayama Campus on Saturday, May 23, 2026, welcoming alumni and other guests for a day of connection and celebration.
Alumni associations of various science and engineering departments hosted general meetings and other events, while students organized numerous activities joined by families and local residents. Visitors were treated to performances by alumni, and children could be seen enjoying the stamp rally around campus. A variety of programs representing Science Tokyo’s diverse fields, such as a breath-check experience hosted by the Fresh Breath Clinic at Science Tokyo Hospital and a Basic Life Support experience by student club TESSO — a student club organizing emergency medicine study sessions — were also held.
The Science Tokyo Meeting, an Institute-sponsored event, was held at the 70th Anniversary Auditorium and online in the afternoon. It opened with video messages from students who graduated in March 2026, followed by a keynote speech for the first session by Vice President for Sports Science Koji Murofushi, who is also the director of the GENTEN Research Center. Murofushi, who won gold in the men’s hammer throw at the 2004 Athens Olympics and bronze at the 2012 London Olympics, reflected on his career and research activities, and introduced the new center, established in April 2026. Toward the end of the speech, audience members joined in simple physical exercises that can easily be incorporated into daily life.
The second session, facilitated by Executive Vice President for Research Mutsuko Hatano, included a discussion on the Visionary Initiatives (VIs), which form an Institute-wide cross-disciplinary research and education framework introduced in April 2025. Professor Kei Sakaguchi, program director (PD) of the Innovative-Life Society VI, Professor Mika Goto, PD of the GX Frontier VI, and Professor Yoshikazu Isomura from the Future Intelligence VI, introduced the goals and activities of their respective initiatives. In the second half of the session, President and Chief Executive Officer Naoto Ohtake, President and Chief Academic Officer Yujiro Tanaka, third-year Chemical Science and Engineering student Hana Hisatsune, and fourth-year Dentistry student Hono Tajina engaged in a lively discussion.
Later in the day, the customary evening reception was held at Tsubame Terrace in West Building 5. The event was attended by alumni, current students, faculty and staff members, and family members of current students. The evening reception featured a photo exhibition, a video presentation blending scenes of the past and present Ookayama Campus, and a quiz competition. As visitors mingled and reconnected, the venue was bustling until the end of the reception.
Once again, Homecoming Day 2026 in Ookayama was a success thanks to the people involved — the alumni associations, the student clubs and their alumni networks, the various departments that planned and organized the event, and everyone else who joined to engage with the Science Tokyo community.
