Science Tokyo Holds Joint Alumni and Promotional Event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
On September 6, 2026, a university promotional and networking event was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for alumni of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU). The primary objective of this event was to promote the newly established Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo)—formed through the merger of the two universities—and to recruit outstanding international students, while also strengthening networks among local alumni. Since the official launch of Science Tokyo, this served as a milestone occasion bringing together graduates from both institutions in Vietnam for the very first time.
The event commenced with video messages from President and CEO Naoto Ohtake and President and CAO Yujiro Tanaka. In their messages, they expressed deep respect and admiration for the alumni actively contributing on the front lines in Vietnam, accompanied by a strong call to action for alumni to become powerful champions and supporters of Science Tokyo as members of its global community.
Following the opening messages, Executive Vice President for Global Affairs Jun-ichi Takada delivered a presentation on the recent developments and future initiatives of Science Tokyo, highlighting in particular the “Visionary Initiatives (VI),” a new framework for graduate-level research and education. Additionally, Professor Naoya Abe, Associate Director of the Admissions Center, introduced various degree programs taught in English, effectively showcasing the appeal of the university. During the subsequent Q&A session, alumni actively asked questions, engaging in a lively exchange of views regarding the future vision of the Institute.
During the break, participants enjoyed light refreshments while conversing naturally across institutional backgrounds. Following the break, a video message was screened from Professor Kenji Fueki, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and Professor Naoko Seki (Assistant Vice President, Office of Global Affairs), who works closely with Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam (University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City), the local contact for this event. Their message emphasized strong expectations for medical-engineering collaboration and the further strengthening of the alumni network in Vietnam and beyond. Furthermore, Professor Hirotsugu Inoue, Dean of the School of Engineering —who served as advisor to Dr. Ly Hung Anh (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology), the local contact and one of Science Tokyo Alumni Ambassadors —joined live via Zoom to inspire the alumni, expressing his excitement for Science Tokyo's new journey and the innovation created by fusing engineering with healthcare.
Attended by a total of 35 participants, the event proceeded in a warm and friendly atmosphere. To conclude the event, Dr. Tam and Dr. Anh, both of whom devoted great effort to organizing the gathering, delivered closing remarks. In particular, Dr. Anh expressed strong enthusiasm, stating, "Let us send more outstanding Vietnamese students to Science Tokyo," rendering the gathering a resounding success that promises to boost future student recruitment and promotional activities.
