4月2日に大岡山キャンパスで挙行した2026年度4月 東京科学大学入学式の田中学長の式辞は、以下のとおり日本語と英語で行われました。
学士課程
新入生の皆さん、本日は東京科学大学へのご入学、誠におめでとうございます。これまで皆さんを育て、支え、励まし続けてこられたご両親、ご家族の皆様に心より敬意を表しお祝いを申し上げます。ご祝辞を賜ります、東京慈恵会医科大学教授松本暁子先生他、来賓の方々にもご列席頂きましたことに感謝申し上げます。
To all new students, congratulations on your admission to Institute of Science Tokyo. I also extend my gratitude to your families and all who have supported you. I will now deliver the President's address first in Japanese, and then in English.
入学生の皆さんは、それぞれ志や希望をもって入学してきたと思います。今日まで導いてくださった先生方、共に学んだ友人、地域の方々など、皆さんの歩みを支えてくださったすべての方々に、今日という節目にあらためて感謝の思いを寄せてください。人は決してひとりで成長するものではありません。自らが多くの関係性の中で育まれてきたことを自覚し、それはライバルであったとしてもその存在に感謝するとき、志はより確かなものとなると思います。
東京科学大学は、理工学と医歯学を基盤に、情報学、リベラルアーツ、人文社会科学が交わる場でもあります。今年、本学は国際卓越研究大学に認定されました。私たちが目指す卓越とは、規模や成果を争うことではなく、社会の人々と共に「科学の進歩」と「人々の幸せ」とを結びつけ、善き未来を実現することにあります。
17世紀の数学者であり哲学者でもあった、ルネ・デカルトは、その著書『方法序説』において、「困難は分割せよ」と述べ、近代科学の礎を築きました。複雑なものを分割することで理解を深める…分けることは手段であって目的ではありません。分けられた知を再びつなぎあわせるところに、新しい創造が生まれます。
分割された組織では、知識も言語も共通であり、会話は弾み、楽しく心地よいものです。皆さんも過去を振り返れば思い当たることもあると思います。
しかし皆さん、入学後は、異なる知識、言語、そして価値観を持つ他者と交わることに積極的に取り組んでみてください。
様々な価値観と共に生きる、即ち共生するということ。それを大学入学後の課題としてみてはどうでしょうか。その行為は、自分が正しいと思っているものを見つめなおし、より質の高いものに高めていく貴重な機会となるからです。
異なる概念や価値観が出会う場こそ、より深い理解と創造が生まれる場です。理工学と医歯学、科学と人文社会学、日本と世界――それらが対話することで新しい価値が生まれ、社会は前進するのです。現在の社会情勢を鑑みるときにこのようなプロセスの重要性はますます増大していると思います。
共生、共に生きるということにおいて重要なことが二つあります。ひとつは平等よりも公平を大切にすることです。両者の違いは何か？皆さんの多くが馴染んできた学校の制服を例にとると解りやすいと思います。平等とは同じサイズの制服を生徒全員に配ることです。公平とは、個々の生徒にあったサイズの制服を配ることです。
もうひとつは、相互に尊重しあうということです。相手の立場、考え方を尊重していく。自分の考えが正しいと確信する時こそ、相手の意見を尊重し耳を傾けていく。そうすればSNSなどでみられる、正義感の暴走によるバッシングはなくなると思います。
公平と尊重が保証された中でこそ心理的な安全が確保され、共生、共に生きることは可能となります。そして、共生する中で、新たな創造を生み出し、新たな友人を得ていってください。
皆さんの大学生活が、知的な探究を通じて自らを高めるものとなり、その成果がやがて善き未来を実現する力となることを心より祈念し、式辞といたします。
Dear international students,
Each of you has arrived here with your own hopes and dreams. As you mark this milestone, please take a moment to reflect with gratitude on all those who have guided and supported you. No one grows alone. When we recognize the relationships that have shaped us, our sense of purpose becomes even stronger.
Institute of Science Tokyo stands at the intersection of science and engineering, medicine and dentistry, informatics, and the liberal arts and humanities, Japan and the world. This year, our university was designated a University for International Research Excellence. The excellence we pursue is not measured by scale or rankings, but by our commitment to connect scientific progress with human wellbeing, and to help realize a better, brighter future together with society.
René Descartes once wrote "Divide each difficulty into as many parts as possible." Division deepens understanding — but it is a means, not an end. It is in the reconnection of divided knowledge that new ideas are born. I therefore encourage you to actively engage with those who have different knowledge, languages, and values.
Coexistence — living alongside diverse perspectives — is the challenge I set before you, for it is precisely where differing values meet that deeper understanding and genuine innovation emerge. Two principles are essential to coexistence. The first is equity over equality — not treating everyone in the same way, but giving each person what they truly need. The second is mutual respect. Especially when you are most convinced you are right, that is precisely when you must listen to others. Where equity and respect are present, true coexistence becomes possible.
I sincerely hope your university years will be filled with intellectual inquiry, and that what you create here will one day become a force for a better, brighter world.

大学院新入生の皆さん、ご入学おめでとうございます。また、これまで皆さんを支えてこられたご家族、恩師、関係者の皆様にも、大学を代表して深く感謝申し上げます。ご祝辞を賜ります日本電気株式会社特別顧問遠藤信博様他来賓の方々にもご列席頂きましたことに御礼申し上げます。

東京科学大学は、2024年10月、「科学の進歩」と「人々の幸せ」との探求をミッションに掲げ誕生しました。このミッションは、「社会と共に新たな価値を創造する」とい言葉が続きます。このミッションのとおり、「善き未来」の実現を目標に、「Visionを共有する社会のステークホルダーとエコシステムを構築する」ことを掲げ、国際卓越研究大学に認定されました。
私たちは、この国際卓越研究大学の目標を実現するために、Visionary Initiatives（VI）という組織を立ち上げました。Visionごとに学問領域を横断して研究や教育を進めることが目的で、それは大学院組織が中心になります。このVisionは８つあり、人の生活、社会、そして地球に関わる重要なものばかりです。
本学はVisionary Initiativesを通じて、専門の枠を超えて知が循環する環境を築こうとしています。理工学と医歯学、情報と人文、基礎と応用――異なる領域が交わる「交差点」を数多く生み出していきます。街の交差点には衝突を避けるための信号がありますが、VIの交差点には信号機はありません。その代わりなるものは何でしょうか？
そこに求められるのは、対話だと私たちは考えています。大学院生となった皆さんには、ぜひこの交差点に立ち、異なる価値観と対話し、常識を疑い合いながら問いを磨いてほしいと願っています。そこにこそ、真理を探求し、社会をより良く変える創造の芽があるはずです。
交差点における対話は、お互いにとって学びの場でもありますが、新たな協調の出発点にもなるものです。
皆さんの中には、ひたすら真理の探究の道を歩む人もいると思います。素晴らしいことです。ただその先に、科学の力で社会の課題を照らし、人々の願いを形にするための共同作業も考えてみてください。そこには、皆さんの発見が自分だけのものでなく他者に喜びをもたすという新たな感動があるはずです。
他方、人々の幸せの実現を目指している人は、これからの新しい道でも、自分の専門領域のみに甘んじるのではなく、他分野との協調によって得られる科学の力で新たな成果を求めてください。そこには、その新たな果実を享受する社会の人々と分かち合う喜びがあるはずです。
大学院における研究と学びの関係でいえば、修士課程は学びに、博士課程は研究に重点がありますが、深い研究は学習を基盤とし、学習は研究によって深まるという関係でもあります。修士課程の皆さんは勿論、博士課程の皆さんも、明確な目標を立て、コラボレーションを意識しつつ有意義な時間を過ごしてください。
幸いなことに、本学には、皆さんの強力なサポーターとなる教職員や研究者、そして先輩が多数在籍しています。そんな優れた仲間たちと交流しながら、本学がミッションとして掲げる「科学の進歩」と「人々の幸せ」とを探求してください。
Dear international students,
Institute of Science Tokyo was founded in October 2024 with a mission to advance science and human wellbeing to create value for and with society. Guided by this mission, our university has been designated a University for International Research Excellence, committed to orchestrating an ecosystem with those who share our vision of a better, brighter future.
To achieve Science Tokyo’s goals, we launched the Visionary Initiatives, eight interdisciplinary programs that address critical challenges facing life, society, and the planet. Through these initiatives, we are creating intersections where science, engineering, medicine, dentistry, informatics, and the humanities meet. Unlike street intersections, ours have no traffic lights — only dialogue. I hope each of you will stand at these intersections, engage with different perspectives, and refine your research. That is precisely where you will find the seeds of discovery and meaningful change.
Whether you pursue pure research or apply science to real-world challenges, I encourage you to go beyond the boundaries of your own field. Collaboration across disciplines opens new possibilities. In sharing your discoveries with others, you will find deeper purpose and meaning.
Graduate school is a place to create knowledge and to improve yourself. You are fortunate to have outstanding faculty and fellow students here to support you. Together, let us advance science and human wellbeing to create new value for and with society.
