Good morning. Many of you are international graduates, and so I will deliver this address first in English, and then in Japanese.
Before beginning my address, I would like to speak briefly about the recent natural disasters in Japan and abroad — earthquakes, heavy rains, and landslides. I offer my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives, and my heartfelt sympathy to all those affected.
Science Tokyo is contributing to the recovery efforts: our engineering colleagues are assisting reconstruction work, our medical colleagues have sent disaster medical teams, and the university has raised relief funds.
There is a reason I speak of this today. At disaster sites, support through science and engineering and support through medicine and dentistry are not separate endeavors; they serve the same people and the same purpose. Different disciplines realize their full strength when they come together to address society's challenges, and the practical knowledge born of such encounters is precisely what the world needs today.
Now, congratulations to all of you who will receive your degrees from Institute of Science Tokyo this morning. This achievement is the result of your own dedication, supported by your supervisors, families, and friends, to all of whom I express the university's sincere gratitude.
Your alma mater is now taking its first steps as a University for International Research Excellence. That excellence will not be measured by size or rankings, but by what you accomplish in laboratories, hospitals, companies, and communities around the world. You are its pioneers.
Let me leave you with two thoughts.
First, even in the age of artificial intelligence, do not skip over what is difficult. AI is remarkably good at removing hardship, yet judgment is cultivated through struggle. Hold on to the difficulties that are still teaching you something. Which questions are worth asking, and what is right — these decisions will always remain yours.
Second, talk with people who are different from you. Meaningful dialogue rests on equity and mutual respect. Equality is a one-size-fits-all uniform, handed to everyone alike; equity is a uniform tailored to each person, in the size that truly fits. And respect matters most at the moment you are certain you are right — that is precisely when you should listen to those who see things differently. Only where equity and respect are present can we truly live together, and it is through living together and sharing different perspectives that creativity takes hold, and innovation follows.
Science Tokyo will always be your home port. Like a ship returning to prepare for its next voyage, come back whenever you need to.
Take pride in all that you have accomplished here. Congratulations once again, and I wish you every success in the journeys ahead.
Science Tokyo
