Good morning. Many of you are international students, and so I will deliver this address first in English, and then in Japanese.
Before beginning my address, I would like to say a few words about the natural disasters that have occurred recently in Japan and abroad — earthquakes, heavy rains, and landslides.
I offer my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives, and I extend my heartfelt sympathy to all those affected.
Science Tokyo is contributing to the recovery efforts: our engineering colleagues are assisting reconstruction work, our medical colleagues have sent disaster medical teams, and the university has raised relief funds. There is a reason I speak of this today. At disaster sites, support through science and engineering and support through medicine and dentistry are not separate endeavors; they serve the same people and the same purpose. Different disciplines realize their full strength when they come together to address society's challenges, and the practical knowledge born of such encounters is precisely what the world needs today.
Now, on behalf of the faculty and staff, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you on your admission to Institute of Science Tokyo. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to your families and supporters who have encouraged and supported you.
Under the leadership of President and CEO Naoto Ohtake, Science Tokyo is now taking its first steps as a University for International Research Excellence. The excellence we seek is not measured by size or rankings. It is measured by whether we can connect the progress of science with human wellbeing, and create value together with society. To reach these goals, we have set up eight Visionary Initiatives. They are places where knowledge goes beyond traditional academic boundaries. Through these initiatives, we are creating many cross points, where science and engineering, medicine and dentistry, information science, and the humanities and social sciences come together.
Today, I would like to suggest two things to you. First, even in the age of artificial intelligence, do not skip what is difficult. AI is very good at removing hardship and saving effort.
But judgment is cultivated through struggle. Throughout your lives, you will decide which difficulties to leave for AI, and which to keep for yourselves. I ask you to hold on to the difficulties that are still teaching you something. Because judgment grows when you work through them.
Second, talk with people who are different from you. Meaningful dialogue depends on one important value: respect. In dialogue, respect means valuing the other person's view, even when your opinions differ. Such respect matters most when you are sure that you are right. That is exactly when you should listen. Mutual respect is the only way for us to truly live together. And living together in diversity is what makes new ideas possible. When different perspectives and experiences meet, creativity is born, and innovation follows.
Congratulations once again on your admission. We are delighted to have you here, and we look forward to creating a brighter future together with all of you.
