Homecoming Day 2025 on Yushima Campus
Following its establishment following the integration between Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) in October 2024, Science Tokyo held its first post-merger Homecoming Day event on Yushima Campus on October 11, 2025. This event followed the format of prior events held at the former TMDU, and welcomed back numerous graduates from the medical and dental sciences, as well as the science and engineering fields, along with current students, faculty, and staff.
This year’s Homecoming Day not only featured talks by Science Tokyo faculty and Members of the Board, but also a special exhibition that displayed a selection of significant items from the Institute’s collection.
Held in the foyer just outside Akio Suzuki Memorial Hall, the exhibition showcased a replica of the Kaitai Shinsho, or New Book on Anatomy, from the Ochanomizu Library, a set of ohaguro tools from the Dental Museum used to blacken teeth for aesthetic, social, and health reasons until the Meiji era, and a replica of the Nobel Prize medal and diploma from the Science Tokyo Museum and Archives. Visitors eagerly inspected the exhibits, particularly enjoying the opportunity to study certain pieces that usually are not available to the public.
The main event, which featured special talks by faculty and Members of the Board, was held in Akio Suzuki Memorial Hall. A screening of celebratory messages from overseas alumni opened the event, followed by a performance by the Science Tokyo mixed choir MoDerato.
Professor Kenichiro Isozaki of the Institute for Liberal Arts (ILA), an Akutagawa Prize-winning author, delivered the keynote of the first session. In his talk “Working as a Novelist,” Isozaki reflected on how his upbringing influenced his writing and shared his thoughts about his mission as a novelist.
In the second session, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Naoto Ohtake and President and Chief Academic Officer (CAO) Yujiro Tanaka were joined by Executive Vice President for Institute Strategy and Executive Vice President for Research and Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration Tetsushi Furukawa to present a talk on Science Tokyo’s vision and research structure. First, Furukawa described the Visionary Initiatives (VIs), a vision-driven interdisciplinary research framework introduced in April 2025 to guide the Institute’s efforts toward realizing a better, brighter future, and introduced the new Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME), established on July 1, 2025. Ohtake and Tanaka rounded out the session with an in-depth look into the vision of the future for the new Science Tokyo.
To wrap up this special day, a reception was held in the faculty lounge on the 26th floor of M&D Tower for medical and dental sciences alumni who had graduated at least 30 years ago.
Science Tokyo would like to express a warm thank-you to everyone who attended Homecoming Day 2025 in Yushima. The Institute looks forward to continued, active engagement with its diverse graduates.
