Homecoming Day 2025 in Yushima
On Oct 11, 2025, Science Tokyo held its first Homecoming Day event on Yushima Campus since its integration. This event followed the format of prior events held at the former Tokyo Medical and Dental University, and welcomed back a great number of graduates from both the medical and dental sciences as well as the science and engineering fields, along with current students, faculty, and staff.
This year’s Homecoming Day not only featured talks by Science Tokyo faculty and Members of the Board, but also a special exhibition that displayed a selection of significant items from the Institute’s collection.
Presented in the foyer in front of the Akio Suzuki Memorial Hall on the second floor of the M&D Tower, the exhibition showcased a replica of the Kaitai Shinsho (“New Book on Anatomy”) from the Ochanomizu Library, a set of ohaguro tools (used in the erstwhile custom of staining “teeth black”) from the Dental Museum, and a replica of the Nobel Prize Medal and Diploma from the Museum and Archives. Visitors eagerly inspected the exhibits one by one, enjoying the rare opportunity to study pieces from collections that are usually closed to the public.
The main event – special talks presented by faculty and board members – kicked off at 3 p.m. in the Akio Suzuki Memorial Hall. A screening of celebratory messages from overseas alumni opened the event, followed by a performance by the Science Tokyo mixed choir, MoDerato.
Professor Kenichiro Isozaki of the Institute for Liberal Arts and an Akutagawa Prize-winning author, delivered the keynote of the first session. In his talk, “Working as a Novelist,” he reflected on how his upbringing influenced his writing and shared his thoughts about his mission as a novelist.
In the second session, President and CEO Naoto Ohtake and President and CAO Yujiro Tanaka were joined by Executive Vice President for Research and Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration Tetsushi Furukawa to present a talk on “Science Tokyo’s Vision and Research Structure.” First, Furukawa described the “Visionary Initiatives (VIs)”, an vision-driven integrated research framework introduced in April 2025 to guide Institute efforts toward realizing a brighter future, and introduced the new “Institute for Biomedical Engineering” established on July 1, 2025. Ohtake and Tanaka rounded out the session with an in-depth look into their vision of the future of the new Institute.
Afterwards, a special reception was held at 5:15 p.m. in the faculty lounge on the 26th floor of the M&D Tower for medical and dental sciences alumni who had graduated at least 30 years ago.
We would like to express our warm gratitude to everyone who attended Homecoming Day 2025 in Yushima. We look forward to your continued engagement with Science Tokyo.
