Minoru Kiuchi, Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy, visited Science Tokyo’s Yushima Campus on May 8, 2025, and met with President and CEO Naoto Ohtake and President and CAO Yujiro Tanaka.
Minister Kiuchi’s first stop was the Intensive Care Unit of Institute of Science Tokyo Hospital, guided by Ohtake and Tanaka. Professor Kenji Wakabayashi, Director of the Intensive Care Unit, described the unit’s collaborative initiatives with researchers in science and engineering fields. As one example, Associate Professors Tomohiro Amemiya (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) and Soichiro Yoshida (Department of Urology) explained their progress in developing the world’s first medical AR glasses and demonstrated its facial recognition technology on the minister.
The minister then visited Skills Lab II, a practical training room for dental sciences students, where he experienced operating a haptic reproduction VR dental simulator under the guidance of Jun Tsuruta, Teaching Professor of the Center for Healthcare Education.

Minister Kiuchi reflected, “This visit gave me a new appreciation for outcomes of medical-engineering collaboration made possible by the integration of Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tokyo Institute of Technology.”
In the roundtable discussion that followed, Ohtake and Tanaka exchanged views with Minister Kiuchi on innovative approaches to integrating two institutions with different cultures, the new Science Tokyo’s future-facing Visionary Initiative (VI), and “global brain circulation” – an initiative to mutually empower research and researchers in both Japan and its partners by promoting mobility and collaborative exchange within the international community. Following the roundtable, Minister Kiuchi expressed his hopes that “interdisciplinary initiatives will spread further throughout the country.”
