17th Multidisciplinary International Student Workshop 2026 held at Science Tokyo
55 participants joined the event, including 10 exchange students from the Asia-Oceania Top University League on Engineering (AOTULE)
The 17th Multidisciplinary International Student Workshop (MISW 2026) was jointly hosted by the Schools of Engineering, Materials and Chemical Technology, and Environment and Society at the Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo). MISW was previously organized by Tokyo Institute of Technology and has continued at Science Tokyo, maintaining its long-standing role in fostering international and interdisciplinary academic exchange.
MISW brings together graduate students from across Science Tokyo and international students from partner institutions affiliated with the Asia-Oceania Top University League on Engineering (AOTULE). The workshop promotes cross-disciplinary dialogue through the exchange of research methodologies, perspectives, and values. It also provides an opportunity for participants to develop skills for multicultural collaboration and to explore approaches to complex global challenges.
MISW 2026 was held on August 3–4, 2026, with 55 student presenters, including 11 exchange students. The program included 49 oral-presentations and 6 poster-presentations, covering a wide range of topics across interdisciplinary research topics.
The workshop opened with remarks by Professor Hidetoshi Sekiguchi, Executive Vice President for Education at Science Tokyo. He welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary research and international collaboration in advancing science and technology. This was followed by introductions from representatives of AOTULE member universities, who presented brief overviews of their institutions and research environments. Participating universities included:
- The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
- National Taiwan University
- Nanyang Technological University
- University of Malaya
- Institut Teknologi Bandung
- Hanoi University of Science and Technology
- Indian Institute of Technology Madras
- University of Moratuwa
Research presentations formed the core of the workshop, while the poster session enabled close and interactive discussion. Oral presentation sessions were held in two parallel venues and continued through the morning of the second day. Student session chairpersons supported the program by introducing presenters, managing the schedule, and facilitating discussion. All presentations and discussions were conducted in English, providing an inclusive setting for international academic exchange.
A highlight of MISW 2026 was the plenary lecture by Muhammad Hanif of DeepX Inc., titled “Orchestrating Multi-Robot Collaboration: From Aerial Drones to Heavy Machinery.” The lecture introduced practical perspectives on multi-robot collaboration, followed by an engaging question-and-answer session.
MISW 2026 concluded with an interactive game session that encouraged informal discussion and networking among participants. A banquet followed, providing a further opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange, and the presentation-award ceremony was held afterward.
All student presentations were evaluated by faculty members from the three host schools. The presentation awards were presented to the following students:
Outstanding Presentation Award:
- Miguel Aljibe
Excellent Presentation Award:
- Chuangdong Chen
- Konoka Fujimoto
- John Loui Tadia
- Aldian Suyoto
- Irshad Hussain
Selected presenters from MISW 2026, including Science Tokyo students and award recipients, will participate in the AOTULE Student Workshop hosted by Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, in December 2026.
The following Student Executive Committee members were responsible for preparing and operating MISW 2026:
- Numan Amri Maliky
- Horhok Lim
