Multidisciplinary International Student Workshop 2024 held face-to-face

March 4, 2025

- 69 participants from Tokyo Tech and 9 AOTULE member universities

Participants in the opening ceremony of MISW2024

Each August, the Schools of Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Environment and Society at Tokyo Institute of Technology* jointly host the Multidisciplinary International Student Workshop (MISW). This event brings together graduate students from these schools, along with participants from member universities of the Asia-Oceania Top University League on Engineering (AOTULE). The workshop promotes cross-disciplinary dialogue, encouraging the exchange of methodologies, values, and worldviews. Through these interactions, students explore paths toward multicultural collaboration and innovative solutions to global challenges.

Until 2019, we held in-person workshops for international students attending the AOTULE Summer Program. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 workshop was canceled, followed by an online format in 2021 and a hybrid format in 2022. Since 2023, the workshop has fully returned to an in-person format. MISW 2024 took place on August 5th and 6th, with 69 students participating: 56 from Tokyo Tech, 12 from AOTULE, and 1 from the Asia-Oceania Strategic Universities Exchange Program (AOSU).

The first day of the workshop began with opening remarks from Dr. Kazuya Masu, President of Tokyo Institute of Technology, followed by introductions from international students representing nine AOTULE member universities. Six participating students then presented their posters. Oral presentations were held in two separate venues and continued until the morning of the second day, with each student delivering a 10-minute presentation followed by a 4-minute Q&A session, chaired by a participant selected from among the attendees. All presentations and Q&A sessions were conducted in English.

In the afternoon of the second day, Prof. Toshiyuki Yokoi from the Nanospace Catalysis Unit at Tokyo Institute of Technology and iPEACE223 Inc. delivered a keynote lecture on 'Zeolite Catalysis for Carbon Neutrality.' The audience learned about zeolite materials and their catalytic activity, along with recent advancements in carbon-neutral processes such as methanol-to-olefins and methane-to-methanol conversions. This was followed by an engaging Q&A session.
