The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) promotes advances in biomedical science achieved through problem-solving and innovation in medical technology developed through collaboration among clinical practitioners, biomedical and engineering researchers, and industrial labs.
BME aims to realize a society where everyone can receive optimal medical and dental care at any time.
Mission
- Enhance mutual understanding of the different mindsets of researchers in the medical and dental sciences and in science and engineering to promote problem-solving in the medical and dental fields, exploration of clinical applications of advanced technology, and bilateral biomedical engineering research.
- Leverage interdisciplinary co-creation, industry-government-academia collaboration, and international networks to foster clinical innovation.
- Contribute to building a healthier world by establishing sustainable medical and dental care systems and cultivating globally competitive biomedical engineers.

Accelerating integration of biomedical engineering research at Science Tokyo Hospital
Science Tokyo is dedicated to “advancing science and human wellbeing to create value for and with society.” The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) was established to accelerate intellectual creativity and the development of real-world applications in the medical field.
Collaborative research enabled by integrating engineering and the medical sciences has the potential to unlock new value in medicine; however, clinical trials and steady, continuous improvements are essential to making that a reality. This process arguably represents the biggest hurdle to sharing the benefits of collaborative biomedical engineering research with society.
BME is promoting translational research by establishing a research network to connect the medical and dental sciences with the science and engineering fields and by facilitating collaborative research with companies in the industry.
By experiencing clinical settings first-hand, primarily at Science Tokyo Hospital, science and engineering researchers will gain a genuine awareness of the actual challenges facing front-line care. It will help to align them with their medical counterparts and inspire innovative lines of research. BME aims to propel collaborative biomedical engineering research to new heights through this hospital-based approach and unprecedented close cooperation across disciplines. It also places great importance on international collaboration, aiming to incorporate cutting-edge aspects of overseas research and share entirely new value unique to Science Tokyo with the world.
Minor inconveniences that medical practitioners experience daily may reveal the way to significant research insights. Seemingly unrelated technologies could unexpectedly hold the key to transform medical care. Research at BME can present a rewarding challenge: our members work alongside like-minded medical professionals and researchers while continuing to perform their regular duties. We look forward to welcoming many more medical professionals and researchers eager to meet that challenge.
