First Town Hall Meeting for students held

September 3, 2025

Science Tokyo held its first Town Hall Meeting for students on July 23 on Yushima Campus. Some 60 students joined President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Naoto Ohtake and President and Chief Academic Officer (CAO) Yujiro Tanaka to openly discuss the future of Science Tokyo.

Following the establishment of Science Tokyo on October 1, 2024, the Institute’s Town Hall Meetings were initiated by Ohtake and Tanaka to encourage open discussion on various issues. Both leaders place great importance on uniting the community as a dynamic team while respecting the history and culture of Science Tokyo’s predecessor universities. The Town Hall Meetings form a crucial step in strengthening this team mentality.

Facilitating the July meeting was Chief Integration Officer (CItgO) Kaori Iida, who has also been the main facilitator at previous meetings with faculty members.

At this meeting, Ohtake and Tanaka shared with the students a summary of Science Tokyo’s vision for the Universities for International Research Excellence program, an initiative by the government of Japan to boost the research capabilities of its universities. They described the envisioned Science Tokyo 25 years into the future as an institution that connects with society and the world through a shared vision, co-creates outstanding research capabilities and societal impact, and leads the global ecosystem.

In addition to discussing the Science Tokyo vision, Ohtake and Tanaka also openly exchanged opinions on student life, answering questions frankly and sharing stories from their own student days.

This Town Hall Meeting was a valuable opportunity to gather opinions directly from students, while also providing students with a relaxed environment where they can directly convey their thoughts and feelings to Science Tokyo leadership.

Science Tokyo will continue to engage in candid dialogue that aims to discover new possibilities arising at the intersection of science, engineering, and the medical and dental sciences.
