Rowing club victorious at 56th Kanto Regatta
The Tokyo Tech* Rowing Club has won the men's eight competition at the Kanto Regatta for science and engineering students, held at the Toda Boat Course in Toda City, Saitama Prefecture on July 13. The regatta, the 56th of its kind, was the first competition for Tsubame III, the new boat acquired by the club in 2024.
The Kanto Regatta for science and engineering students features rowing clubs from science and engineering-focused universities and faculties across the Kanto region. The teams put their strength and skills to the test in a 1,000-meter rowing competition. This year, Tokyo Tech took on the role of the lead university that organized and managed the event.
In addition to the men’s eight competition, Tokyo Tech performed admirably in the 500-m men’s coxed four for rookies. Victory in the men’s double skull went to Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), which also spelled good things for the future. TMDU and Tokyo Tech will merge to form Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) in October 2024.
Men’s eight
In this category, eight rowers sitting on alternate sides propel the boat with sweep oars while one cox steers. Each rower holds one oar with both hands. The men’s eight, sometimes considered the ultimate form of competitive rowing, is truly a speedy affair.

Comments from crew leader Yusuke Yoshino
The contest day overlapped with the day of the graduate school entrance examinations for the 4th-year students, and one of us fell ill three days before the competition, so we were anxious. However, during the actual race, we were able to get ahead early and row calmly to victory.
My days in the lab are starting to get busy. While focusing first and foremost on my studies, I hope to continue working hard on my rowing, and to make the necessary preparations for the upcoming Intercollegiate Rowing Championships.
