Visionary Initiatives to Forge the Future — Announcing Three New VIs with Their Research Frameworks
On April 15, 2025, Science Tokyo launched its Visionary Initiatives (VI)—a university-wide research framework designed to unlock the future. Initially, three VIs were launched. Now, Science Tokyo has added three more, bringing the total to six, and has released details on each initiative along with the participating researchers.
This endeavor embodies the Institute's mission: to explore the advancement of science and the happiness of people and create new value with society. These initiatives go beyond addressing immediate societal challenges—they form a future-oriented framework for promoting research guided by long-term visions.
In fiscal year 2025, approximately 60 researchers will participate in each of the six VIs, totaling about 360 researchers. Moving forward, Science Tokyo plans to expand participation in each VI and to add new VIs in response to research developments, new knowledge, and evolving social needs. By the end of fiscal year 2028, the Institute aims for all its researchers to be engaged in education and research that contributes to the well-being of people worldwide, guided by these shared visions. This is the future that Science Tokyo aspires to—and is already beginning to realize.
Six Visions to Realize a "Better Life," "Better Society," and "Better Planet"
These six Visionary Initiatives are conceived as pathways to realizing a “better life,” “better society,” and “better planet”—three pillars that Science Tokyo upholds in its commitment to supporting people’s well-being.
—For a better life, Science Tokyo will promote Total Health Design , which seeks to achieve the health and well-being of all, and Well-Vitality Science , which envisions a future where each person leads a mentally rich and diverse life.
—For a better society, contributions will be made through Innovative-Life Society , where cyber-physical spaces open up new ways of living, and Space Innovation , which explores the development of space habitats.
—And for a better planet, Science Tokyo will pursue GX Frontier, which leverages advanced science and technology to make green transformation a reality, and esilience-Tech Society, which aims to build a society resilient to disasters and pandemics.
By mobilizing its collective knowledge across disciplines, Science Tokyo is committed to advancing these six initiatives and building a better future through the power of science.
New Value Brought by University-Integration
The Visionary Initiatives were made possible for the first time by the integration of two national universities: the former Tokyo Medical and Dental University, with strengths in medicine and dentistry, and the former Tokyo Institute of Technology, known for its excellence in science and engineering. Details of the six initiatives, the participating researchers, and messages from six program directors leading each VI are now available on the Science Tokyo's official website. We invite you to explore the new value Science Tokyo—reborn through integration—is bringing to the world.
