Reason for choosing Tokyo Tech

I chose Tokyo Tech because of its strong reputation in engineering and applied research, especially in fields related to coastal and environmental engineering. The opportunity to work with highly experienced professors in a research-intensive environment was a major motivation for me.

What I was most passionate about

I was most passionate about understanding coastal processes and developing nature-based or hybrid solutions for coastal protection. My research focused on wave–structure–vegetation interactions, which allowed me to combine laboratory experiments, numerical modelling, and real-world coastal challenges.

My most significant learning experience or memory

One of my most significant learning experiences was conducting independent research while learning how to communicate my findings clearly through papers, presentations, and discussions with experts. Living and studying in Japan also taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of careful, detail-oriented research.

What I liked best about Tokyo Tech

What I liked best was the supportive academic environment, excellent research facilities, and the culture of precision and professionalism. The professors, laboratory members, and international atmosphere helped me grow both as a researcher and as a person.

Current activities and career

I currently work as an independent research consultant in coastal engineering and ecohydrodynamics, focusing on nature-based and hybrid coastal protection systems for vulnerable tropical coastlines. My work examines wave–vegetation–structure interactions, portable reef and rubble-mound attenuator design, mangrove biomechanics, and field-deployable restoration strategies. I combine laboratory and field data with numerical modelling, physics-based analysis, and AI/ML-supported empirical approaches to evaluate coastal protection performance. I also collaborate with academic partners on research related to mangrove restoration, wave attenuation, and climate-resilient coastal infrastructure, while continuing to represent Institute of Science Tokyo as an Alumni Ambassador.

How my studies at Tokyo Tech have contributed to my career

My doctoral training at Tokyo Tech shaped the foundation of my career as a coastal engineering researcher and independent consultant. It taught me to approach coastal problems through an interdisciplinary lens, combining engineering design, ecological understanding, community perspectives, laboratory experiments, field observations, and numerical modelling. Working under a rigorous research culture strengthened my ability to define original research questions, design experiments independently, analyse complex hydrodynamic data, and communicate results internationally. The precision, discipline, and collaborative mindset I developed at Science Tokyo continue to guide my current work on nature-based and hybrid coastal protection solutions for climate-resilient tropical coastlines.

Message to prospective students

My advice to prospective students is to make the most of Science Tokyo’s interdisciplinary and international environment. Come with curiosity, but also be open to reshaping your ideas through discussions with professors, lab members, and peers from different backgrounds. Research here requires patience, independence, and attention to detail, but the learning experience is deeply rewarding. Do not limit yourself only to your laboratory work; engage with seminars, student communities, fieldwork, and life in Japan. Science Tokyo offers not only excellent academic training, but also a chance to grow as a confident, globally minded researcher and professional.
