Application Guide for the Doctoral Degree Program Under the
“China State-Funded Postgraduate Overseas Study Program”
Commencing in Fall 2026

1. Outline:
Science Tokyo is accepting applications to a Doctoral Program commencing in Fall 2026 under the “China State-Funded Postgraduate Overseas Study Program.” Interested students are encouraged to first apply to Science Tokyo’s International Graduate Program (B). Successful applicants who have demonstrated excellent academic performance will be exempt from paying application, enrollment, and tuition fees.

2. Enrollment date: Fall 2026

3. Degree program offered: Doctoral program

4. Number of students admitted: Several students from each department

5. Eligibility:
Applicants must be Chinese nationals who:
(1) Will apply to the Doctoral Program under the “China State-Funded Postgraduate Overseas Study Program” set up by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for the first time (and have not applied or been selected previously), and
(2) Have earned or expect to earn a master’s degree by the day before enrollment.

7. Application deadline:
As above, refer to the “Application Guide for International Graduate Program (B) – Early Application for applicants seeking scholarships from their home governments.”
(Note that the Admissions Division, Education Planning Department must receive all application documents on or before October 12, 2025.)

8. Admission screening:
As above, refer to the “Application Guide for International Graduate Program (B) – Early Application for applicants seeking scholarships from their home governments.” (Selection will be based on application documents screening, online interviews, and/or written examinations, as designated by each department.)
 
9. Notification of admission results:
The Announcement of Successful Applicants (in PDF format) will be posted on the "Admissions Results" web page in late January, 2026.
Successful candidates with excellent academic records will also be sent a “Letter of Confirmation” from Science Tokyo indicating that they may be exempted from paying tuition and other fees. This letter is required when applying to the “China State-Funded Postgraduate Overseas Study Program” set up by the CSC.

10. Application, enrollment, and tuition fees:
As above, selected candidates with excellent academic performance may be exempted from paying application, enrollment, and tuition fees to Science Tokyo, but all applicants must initially pay the application fee. Science Tokyo will later refund the fee to selected candidates who qualify for exemption. Refer to the Application Guide for payment procedures.

Application fee: JPY 30,000
Enrollment fee: JPY 282,000
Tuition: JPY 635,400/year

Note: Even if an applicant is recognized as having excellent academic performance and receives a Letter of Confirmation issued by Science Tokyo, they must actually be selected as a scholarship recipient by the CSC to be exempted from paying tuition and other fees. Candidates not selected as scholarship recipients by the CSC are responsible for paying all application, enrollment, and tuition fees even if they were issued a Letter of Confirmation by Science Tokyo.
