President of Tsinghua University visits Science Tokyo

April 30, 2025

On April 16, President Li Luming of Tsinghua University (China) and his delegation visited Science Tokyo. They were welcomed by President and CEO Naoto Ohtake, Executive Vice Presidents for Global Affairs Tomohiro Morio and Jun-ichi Takada, as well as Professors Takehiro Inohara and Masashi Shirabe from the Institute for Liberal Arts. The representatives of both institutions engaged in a lively exchange of views.

During the meeting, discussions centered on long-standing student exchange initiatives, such as the CAMPUS Asia Plus Program and the Science Tokyo - Tsinghua University Joint Graduate Program. Last year the Joint Graduate Program celebrated its 20th anniversary, having produced over 220 graduates. This year, we are marking the 40th anniversary of the academic exchange agreement between the two universities.

The CAMPUS Asia Plus Program is currently conducted in partnership with four universities: Science Tokyo, Tsinghua University, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Korea), and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). Each year, 10 students from each institution are dispatched and received as part of the exchange.
As part of this visit, Science Tokyo and Tsinghua University held a ceremony to renew their academic exchange agreement, reaffirming their commitment to deepening bilateral collaboration. The discussion also touched on expanding cooperation beyond student exchange to include joint research and broader academic partnerships.

Following the signing ceremony, the delegation held a separate meeting with the current Joint Graduate Program students studying at Science Tokyo, which became an invaluable opportunity to hear directly from students participating in the exchange.

This visit and the renewal of the agreement represent an important first step toward a new phase in the partnership between the two universities. Both institutions agreed to further strengthen our partnership in both education and research, striving for deeper academic cooperation.
