President and CEO Ohtake participates in the 6th Japan-Indonesia Rectors’ Conference and Science Tokyo Indonesia Alumni Gathering

August 15, 2025

On July 10, President and Chief Executive Officer Naoto Ohtake and Executive Vice President for Global Affairs Jun-ichi Takada visited Indonesia to attend the 6th Japan-Indonesia Rectors’ Conference. On July 12, they also participated in a Science Tokyo alumni gathering celebrating the first anniversary of Kuramae-Indonesia, the Indonesia branch of the former Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) Alumni Association.

The Japan-Indonesia Rectors’ Conference was held at Hasanuddin University in Makassar, marking the first in-person meeting of this conference since the COVID-19 pandemic. The event welcomed approximately 300 participants, including representatives from 60 Indonesian universities and 32 Japanese universities, as well as government officials from both countries. As of 2025, Indonesia ranks second in terms of international student enrollment at Science Tokyo, and many alumni were present at the conference, making it a valuable opportunity for meaningful dialogue and networking.

Ohtake and Takada then flew to Jakarta to join a Science Tokyo alumni gathering at Sampoerna University that commemorated the first anniversary of the establishment of Kuramae-Indonesia. A total of 43 alumni participated, including 33 from the former Tokyo Tech and 10 from the former Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

The event began with a warm welcome from Dr. Surya Liman, provost of Sampoerna University, followed by opening remarks from Ohtake, who expressed gratitude to the university and attendees. Dr. Fauzan Adziman, director general at Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, delivered a speech in fluent Japanese and English, highlighting the importance of student exchange, research collaboration, and industry-academia partnerships, while expressing strong expectations for Science Tokyo and its alumni. Dr. Sri Angky Soekanto, former dean of Dentistry at Universitas Indonesia, shared fond memories of her time at the former Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

Following a friendly lunch gathering, Ohtake introduced the vision and mission of Science Tokyo. Alumni actively engaged in the discussion that followed, asking questions about the university and its support for Indonesian students.

The closing remarks were delivered by Prof. Panut Mulyono, president of Kuramae-Indonesia and former rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada. He expressed his hopes for continued strong ties between Science Tokyo and its alumni community. Even after the formal closing, alumni stayed to enjoy heartfelt conversations with one another, as well as with Ohtake and Takada.

Kuramae-Indonesia was officially launched in August 2024, led by Prof. Mulyono and others. Alumni from the former Tokyo Medical and Dental University, particularly those from the Faculty of Dentistry, are also actively networking in Indonesia. The gathering was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Associate Professor Farid Triawan of Sampoerna University, who also serves as secretary general of the Indonesia Kuramae Alumni Association and as a specially appointed associate professor at Science Tokyo.

This inaugural alumni gathering in Indonesia for Science Tokyo served as a meaningful step forward, helping participants to share a sense of unity as one university and to reaffirm their bonds as alumni living in Indonesia.
