Professor Takanori Takebe of the Human Biology Research Unit at the Institute of Integrated Research, Science Tokyo, has been named to TIME magazine's "2026 TIME100 Health List", announced by TIME on February 11.
The TIME100 Health List is an annual list compiled by TIME to recognize 100 leaders, innovators, and pioneers who have made the most significant impact on the global healthcare sector. Professor Takebe’s selection was driven by the high acclaim for his Phase 1 clinical trial report, published in the academic journal Med in October 2025. The study successfully verified the safety of the enteral ventilation method—often referred to as "breathing through the gut” in humans.
The results of this trial pave the way for the clinical application of a medical concept that had previously been limited to animal testing. Moving forward, it will be possible to evaluate the treatment's efficacy in patients with severe respiratory failure. This entirely new medical concept of enteral ventilation technology is expected to help save the lives of a wide range of patients, including those with non-respiratory conditions.
