May 8, 2025

Professor Emeritus Hirofumi Akagi from the Institute of Integrated Research and Professor Emeritus Fumio Koyama from the Institute of Integrated Research were elected as International Members of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) on February 11.

The NAE, which was established in 1964 by the United States government, is a non-profit research institution. It is one of the four organizations that constitute the U.S. National Academies, alongside the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), which was founded by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Election to NAE membership is regarded as one of the highest distinctions in the field of engineering. With this year’s election, there are 2,487 U.S. members and 336 international members.

To date, 20 individuals from Japan have been elected as international members. From Science Tokyo, Honorary Professor Yasuharu Suematsu and Honorary Professor Kenichi Iga have already been inducted, bringing the university’s total to four members—the highest among institutions in Japan.

The induction ceremony will be held on October 5 in Washington, D.C.
