The Top Global University Project, a funding project launched in FY 2014 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), aimed to enhance the international competitiveness of higher education in Japan by providing focused support to leading universities that conduct world-class education and research, universities that take on pioneering initiatives, and universities that are committed to comprehensive university reform and internationalization.
After being selected as Type A (top type) universities that conduct world-class education and research, and have the potential to be ranked in the top 100 in world university rankings, TMDU and Tokyo Tech — Science Tokyo’s predecessors — implemented a variety of pioneering initiatives.

Although this project concluded in FY 2023 after a 10-year funding period, the newly formed Science Tokyo continues to implement pioneering initiatives and promote internationalization actively.
