Like other national university corporations in Japan, Institute of Science Tokyo sets mid-term goals and mid-term plans, and undergoes periodic university evaluations.

National university corporations are required to formulate a mid-term plan based on the six-year mid-term goals set by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Future plans

Long-term initiatives such as the Designated National University scheme and the Campus Master Plan outline the future plans of Institute of Science Tokyo.

Evaluation and assessment

National University Corporation Evaluation

The National University Corporation Evaluation, established under the National University Corporation Act, is conducted by the National University Corporation Evaluation Committee within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to evaluate progress in the mid-term goals and mid-term plans of national university corporations. The evaluation results are reflected in the distribution of resources, such as management expense grants.

Evaluation and accreditation of universities

All Japanese national, public, and private institutions must undergo evaluation and accreditation as required by the School Education Act. A third-party evaluation and accreditation organization certified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology conducts evaluation and accreditation every seven years to ensure the quality of education and research at Japan's universities.

Self-assessment and evaluation

To maintain and improve the level of education and research at Japan's universities, Paragraph 1 of Article 109 of the School Education Act requires universities to actively conduct self-assessment and evaluation of their education and research activities, and to disclose the results.
