Tetsushi FURUKAWA

Executive Vice President for Innovation

Tetsushi Furukawa has been executive vice president for innovation at Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) since April 2026.

Before his current position, he served concurrently as executive vice president for institute strategy and executive vice president for research and industry-academia-government collaboration from 2024 to 2026.

Furukawa graduated from the School of Medicine at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) in 1983. He began his medical career as a physician at Tsuchiura Kyodo General Hospital, where he was based from 1983 to 1984. He earned his PhD in medicine from TMDU in 1989.

Furukawa served as a research assistant professor in the Department of Cardiology at the University of Miami, USA, from 1989 to 1990. Upon returning to Japan, he held various research and academic positions, including research fellow at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and assistant professor at TMDU's Medical Research Institute. He was an associate professor at Akita University from 1999 to 2003.

In 2003, Furukawa returned to TMDU as a professor at the Medical Research Institute, where he served until 2023. He held several leadership roles during this period, including executive director and vice president of TMDU.
