Kayoko YAMAMOTO

Executive Vice President for Community Engagement

Kayoko Yamamoto is executive vice president for community engagement at Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo).

Yamamoto earned her bachelor’s degree from Ochanomizu University, her master’s degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), and her doctoral degree from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. She joined Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd. in 1990, and was a member of its editorial board from 2011 to 2024.

Yamamoto was a specially appointed advisor to the president of Ochanomizu University from 2015 to 2019. She was also a member of the Council for Science and Technology at Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) from 2013 to 2023.

In addition to her current role at Science Tokyo, Yamamoto contributes actively to the broader academic community. She has been a part-time lecturer at the University of Electro-Communications since 2011 and has acted as a special advisor to their president since 2020. She also joined Tokyo Tech as a part-time lecturer in 2013 and has been a visiting professor at Tokyo City University since 2022. She is a member of the Management Council of Yamaguchi University and a member of the Japan Science and Technology Agency working group within the National Research and Development Agency Council of MEXT.

Yamamoto received the achievement award for fiscal year 2011 from the Japan Society for Intellectual Production. She is also the author of several books in Japanese, including “Utilizing Media to Increase Research Funding” and “Life Design Guide for Women in Science.”
