Jun-ichi TAKADA
Executive Vice President for Global Affairs
Jun-ichi Takada is executive vice president for global affairs at Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo). He concurrently serves as a professor at the School of Environment and Society.
After receiving his doctoral degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) in 1992, Takada moved to the Faculty of Engineering at Chiba University as an assistant professor. Two years later, he returned to Tokyo Tech as an associate professor at the International Cooperation Center for Science and Technology. While continuing his research on radiowave propagation for wireless communications, he coordinated numerous collaborations with universities in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, enhancing researcher mobility in the Asian region.
Takada was an associate professor at Tokyo Tech’s Department of International Development Engineering, Graduate School of Science and Engineering from 2001 to 2006, when he became a professor. He was chair of the department from 2008 to 2010. Takada served as chair of the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering from 2016 to 2018, where he made significant contributions to the launch of the Global Scientist and Engineers Program (GSEP), Tokyo Tech’s first English-language bachelor’s degree program.
Takada has been involved in international development and cooperation projects in Mongolia, Laos, and Cambodia. He received testimonials for his efforts from the Governor of Bayankhongor Province, Mongolia in 2011 and the Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in 2015. He was also awarded the Cambodian Royal Order of Monisaraphon in 2022 and the Friendship Medal from Mongolia in 2023.
Takada served as a part-time researcher at the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Radio Group and Medical ICT Group of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) from 2003 to early 2006, and again from late 2006 to 2007. At NICT, he served as a national delegate to a task group of the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R), and one recommendation on UWB measurement was published during his chairmanship of the working group.
Takada was a central figure in Tokyo Tech’s international activities. At the International Office, he was international planning officer from 2002 to 2017, excluding 2004, and associate director from 2005 to 2007. He was also a member of the Management Committee for Overseas Offices from 2007 to 2017. Takada was chair of the Implementation Committee for Student Exchange Programs from 2014 to 2019 under the Center for International Education. He then served as vice president for international affairs and director of the Center of International Education from 2019 to 2022.
Takada has served as dean of the School of Environment and Society since 2022, where he has promoted the interdisciplinary research of sustainable social infrastructure.
Takada is a fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) Japan, a senior member of IEEE, and a member of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID). He served as vice president of JASID from 2020 to 2023 and is serving as vice president of IEICE for the 2023-2025 period.
