Learn Science and Technology, and Spread Your Wings on the Global Stage

Institute of Science Tokyo High School (Science Tokyo High School) is the only science and technology high school affiliated with a national university corporation. Science Tokyo High School offers a single department: Science and Technology. The department consists of five fields: Applied Chemistry, Information Systems, Mechanical Systems Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Architectural Design. Affiliated with the Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo), the school promotes educational practices and research in collaboration with the Institute, and many of our graduates pursue higher education and later thrive as researchers, engineers, and other skilled professionals in industry and academia.

Benefits of studying at Science Tokyo High School

Students can choose to study one of five specialized fields based on their interests, as offered in the curriculum of the Science and Technology Department.

Grade 10 students study common subjects together without choosing a specialized field. By studying basic science and technology courses with a focus on general subjects common to all fields, Grade 10 students are able to carefully consider their own interests and aptitudes. Students choose one of the five specialized fields at the end of Grade 10 and study their field from Grade 11. Through advanced experiments and practical training equivalent to university-level science and engineering programs, students leverage the unique features of their chosen field to deepen their understanding, develop their skills, and pursue studies beyond the scope of general high schools.

In April 2027, the school will move to Ookayama campus.

Science Tokyo High School will move from its current location at Tamachi Campus in Minato-ku, Tokyo, to Ookayama Campus (Midorigaoka area) in Meguro-ku, Tokyo. As part of this relocation, two new school buildings are being constructed to support next-generation science and technology education. Leveraging its new location within the university campus, the school will further strengthen its collaboration with Science Tokyo. This move to the new campus marks a bold transformation for Science Tokyo High School, proposing a new vision for science and technology education in a new era and striving to lead the frontier of science and engineering education.

Distinctive educational and research activities

Inquiry-Based Learning: “Self-directed study and acquiring problem-solving skills”

All students at each grade level will engage in inquiry-based learning. Through extensive experiments and practical training, students aim to gain a fundamental understanding of their studies at each grade level. Grade 10 students study basic science and technology subjects common to all fields, providing a foundation for inquiry-based learning. Grade 11 students begin studying highly specialized subjects, fully leveraging the distinctive features of each field. Through advanced experiments and practical training, the program aims to enhance students’ ability to explore and investigate deeply. In Grade 12, every student engages in a “Project Study” as the capstone of their inquiry-based learning, through which they develop their originality and creative thinking. After joining their specialized fields, students also study specialized subjects related to their field. Through these authentic learning experiences unique to Science Tokyo High School, students can spread their wings on the global stage as science and engineering professionals!

High school & university collaborative education: Experience cutting-edge science and technology with Science Tokyo

As an affiliated high school of Science Tokyo, the school actively collaborates with various schools, graduate schools, faculties, academies, research organizations, hospitals, and other organizations within the Institute. Students have many opportunities to attend lectures from university faculty members, gaining exposure to advanced knowledge and research. Through these initiatives, the school is strengthening its ties with both medical and dental sciences, as well as science and engineering fields, aiming to enhance high school and university collaborative education and enrich high school education. The establishment of the new university marked the beginning of Science Tokyo High School’s collaboration with medical and dental science fields. In preparation for the relocation to Ookayama campus, the school is planning to further strengthen its high school and university connections and collaborations. We will continue to implement educational activities that pioneer advanced learning.

International exchange and overseas training: International opportunities including collaborative research with overseas schools and presenting research achievements abroad

High capable and proactive students are selected to participate in international exchange and overseas study trips. As part of our Super Science High School (“SSH”) program, we started an exchange program with De La Salle University Integrated School in the Philippines in FY 2011. From FY 2024, the exchange has been upgraded to "Hybrid Joint Research Program”, consisting of face-to-face exchange and online joint research. Collaborative research with overseas high schools, presenting accumulated research at international venues, and exchanges with students from other countries are all valuable first steps for students who wish to go global in the future.

Message from the Principal

Institute of Science Tokyo High School places inquiry-based activities at the center of learning, in which students utilize science and technology to solve issues they have set for themselves. Students study the basics of inquiry-based activities in Grade 10, deepen their inquiry activities in Grade 11, and complete in Grade 12. This educational program has been developed by our school as a Super Science High School (SSH) and a Super Global High School (SGH), designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The school also fosters students’ communication skills necessary for global talents through activities including collaborative research projects with overseas high schools and research presentations at international science competitions. In addition, the school will further promote high school and university collaboration education, taking opportunity of its relocation to the Ookayama campus in 2027.

Moreover, the school sets up university-level laboratories and facilities, and is proud to have dedicated and highly competent faculty members. Our faculty and staff are committed to ensure that all students acquire a solid foundation in advanced science and technology, and lead a fulfilling school life.

A request for your support

Institute of Science Tokyo High School is proud to have produced numerous science and engineering graduates in its approximately 140 years of tradition with the educational goal of “holistic education oriented toward science and technology”. With this new school name following the establishment of Institute of Science Tokyo (as a result of the merger between Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University) in October 2024, and the relocation to the Ookayama Campus of Institute of Science Tokyo in the near future, the school will be reborn as a new science and technology high school, while also continuing to respect its traditions.

Through the implementation of advanced science and technology education, various exchange programs and educational programs for cultivating global citizens, as well as through the improvement of the school curriculum, we plan to realize a more comprehensive educational environment to foster individuals with independence and creativity who will contribute to society. We would like to ask for your warm support and cooperation.
