Take your first step toward creating a world-changing startup

What comes to mind when you hear the term “startup company”? It might feel like an abstract concept, or perhaps something that has very little to do with your immediate academic goals.

However, across the globe — and naturally, here at Science Tokyo — numerous startups are already generating substantial social and economic impact. Unique and bold startups that challenge convention continue to emerge.

At their core, these startups share a profound desire to change the world. This aspiration is not limited to tech giants that enjoy a global reach. It is equally vibrant in smaller ventures striving to transform the communities around them. Ultimately, they are all driven by a mission to deliver meaningful value to someone in need. I encourage you to begin by looking within yourself to discover the passion or vision you wish to realize.

Once you find that spark, I urge you not to let it remain just an idea, but to take that decisive first step toward making it a reality. Launching a startup is one way to achieve that. Granted, navigating the business landscape involves various risks and undeniable complexities. However, by leveraging the knowledge of science you gain here, along with cutting-edge technology and creativity, a world-changing startup is entirely within your reach. Acquiring the right insights, building robust networks, and proceeding thoughtfully will enable you to successfully chart a course toward realizing your ideas. Wherever that path leads, or however much trial and error it entails, the act of working to give shape to your vision is sure to enrich not only the world around you, but your own life as well.

If you have even the slightest interest in founding a startup that shifts paradigms, I highly encourage you to enroll in the courses offered by the Center for Startup Education. You will soon realize that an incredible number of researchers and students just like you are already embracing these challenges around the world. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to connect with active founders, learn from experienced senior students, and gain invaluable inspiration. This journey will prompt you to deeply re-examine your goals and core values. Before you know it, you may find yourself thriving on the global stage as a visionary entrepreneur.

Overview and Mission

Background and core challenges

Currently, Japan’s startup ecosystem faces a critical shortage of talent capable of bridging the gap between exceptional university research outcomes and successful social implementation — whether in value creation, commercialization, or monetization. Furthermore, there is an insufficient environment for fostering bold risk-taking and providing the structured team support necessary for entrepreneurship.

Our purpose

The Center for Startup Education delivers action-oriented, practical entrepreneurship programs designed for both students and early-career researchers. By translating the Institute’s advanced research achievements into tangible market solutions, we aim to cultivate innovative leaders equipped to generate significant social and economic value through startup creation.

Skills and knowledge to be developed

The Center’s courses aim to cultivate students and researchers capable of:

  • Applying Institute research outcomes to generate substantial social value.
  • Learning from practical failures and persevering in their efforts to realize their vision.
  • Incorporating market and customer feedback and reframing technical development within practical business contexts.
