Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Education offers educational programs to develop DX personnel who can powerfully support social issues to be solved and promote DS&AI research and development, by offering the most advanced data science and AI (DS&AI) knowledge and technologies across disciplines and systematically, beyond the field each student is specialized in.
In FY2019, before the merger of October 2024, the Tokyo Institute of Technology had started Japan’s first all-school data science and AI education for graduate school students. In FY2022 the university joined the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Promotion of Nationwide Deployment of Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education” project, since working as a hub of the Consortium for Strengthening Mathematics, Data Science and AI Education.
Since FY2020, Tokyo Medical and Dental University had been working as the only specialized field cooperation school of the Consortium for Strengthening Mathematics, Data Science and AI Education in medical and dental sciences (a specialized field school since FY2022.)
Institute of Science Tokyo Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Education was established in October 2024 in time for the merger of the universities, to integrate the two universities’ data science and AI education projects and as an integrated educational organization that serves both as a special purpose school and specified domain school.
The institute offers “Institute-wide data science/AI education program” that stretches from the first year of undergraduate degree programs to the doctor’s degree programs to develop “co-creative experts” who can (1) use DS and AI, (2) interact with other researchers through DS and AI and (3) can teach DS and AI, and researchers who can promote DS&AI research and development in their field of expertise.
This program consists of Literacy Level and Applied Basics Level for undergraduate degree programs, Expert Level and Expert Level Plus for graduate school students, and DS&AI TF (Teaching Fellow) program to develop teaching skills.
The Literacy Level and Applied Basics Level offer curriculum pertaining to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Approved Program for Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Smart Higher Education (MDASH)” and has been accredited by the program. The Literacy Level has been selected as literacy level plus, as a particularly excellent educational program. DS&AI TF program is a program to develop TA (Teaching Assistants) to develop the ability to teach DS and AI which are essential for co-creative experts.
Literacy Level
It aims that students learn the basics of mathematics, data science and AI and acquire the fundamental ability to utilize them.
Applied Basics Level
It aims that, based on the knowledge from the Literacy Level, students learn more developed and higher-level knowledge and practical skills and acquire the ability to solve problems using data science and AI.
Expert Level
It aims that students acquire the ability to solve societal issues with data science and AI technologies, the ability to connect data science and AI technologies to various fields, and the ability to teach data science and AI technologies and become co-creative experts.
Expert Level Plus
It aims that students acquire state-of-the-art data science and AI technologies, including generative AI, to solve issues in working in society as top-level researchers and engineers, and learn AI ethics, information laws and regulations, and technologies for responsible AI usage.
DS&AI TF program
It aims that TA learn advanced specialist knowledge on DS and AI and develop the ability to teach DS and AI. The final aim is to be able to teach some classes as TF.
